When girls are young most of them are given at one time or another a small spool knitter. The tool makes a cord, as long as you want. I constructed a larger version of this tool (not the commercial plastic one) and made with the help of my friend Carlin Paige, many colorful ropes using wool yarn. They were then wired inside so they could hold their drawn shape. Mary Alice Johnston helped me install the piece. The idea was just to create a freeform thing out of something timeless and very mundane.
